Galiwa – neuer, süsser Schweizer Öko-Apfel

Bei Äpfeln fehlte bisher eine süsse Sorte, die den Angriffen des Schorfpilzes trotzen kann. Eine solche Sorte ist besonders im Bio-Anbau interessant. Die Apfelzüchter der Forschungsanstalt Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW haben nun einen solchen Apfel entwickelt. Er heisst ‚Galiwa‘ und ist süss, rot und – eben – schorfresistent.
Süss wie die beliebte Sorte Gala sollte er sein, der neue, schorfresistente Apfel – das war das Ziel der Apfelzüchter der Forschungsanstalt Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW. Die neu gezüchtete Sorte Galiwa entspricht den Vorgaben: Sie ist schorfresistent und in Aussehen und Geschmack ähnlich wie Gala – ausgesprochen süss, mit wenig Säure sowie leuchtend rot. Erste Testverkäufe erfolgen in diesem Winter bei Coop Naturaplan, vorerst in sehr kleinen Mengen in der Nordwestschweiz.

Galiwa war einer unter mehreren Tausend Sämlingen

1992 kreuzten die ACW-Züchter die Sorte Gala mit einer schorfresistenten Züchtung und säten die daraus entstandenen Samen ein Jahr später aus. Im Gewächshaustest erwies sich ein Sämling als besonders vielversprechend – einer unter mehreren Tausend namenlosen Sämlingen. 1997 erhielt die Pflanze eine Zuchtnummer und wurde als Baum in die Obstanlage von ACW gepflanzt. Die ersten Früchte gab es im Jahr darauf zu kosten. Weil sie wohlschmeckend waren, wurden von dieser Zuchtnummer weitere Bäume gepflanzt und umfassend geprüft – sowohl in der Schweiz als auch im Ausland. ACW erzielte positive Resultate und Rückmeldungen. Interesse hat auch das Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau in Frick angemeldet.

Die guten Ergebnisse und das rege Interesse bei Schweizer Bio-Produzenten führten zum Entschluss, die Neuzüchtung als Sorte zu lancieren. Der Apfel wurde Galiwa getauft, was auf die Muttersorte Gala und den Züchtungsort Wädenswil hinweist. Mit Galiwa stellt die Forschungsanstalt Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW den Obst-Produzenten eine neue, süsse Apfelsorte zur Verfügung, die sich umweltschonend anbauen lässt, also auch bestens für den Bio-Anbau geeignet ist.
